The August 2017 issue of Yachting has a special feature on Mustang Survival, a company that has been saving lives for 50 years. More specifically, Mustang Survival specializes in saving the lives of people at sea from people in the military to mariners. With their well thought out Mustang Survival suits, they give their customers the tools they need to stay afloat and dry—and alive.
This feature recalls an important topic: the risk of drowning. Many people may not realize just how prevalent of a problem drowning is, but when you consider the facts and numbers, you will be able to see just how serious and common drowning is.
The CDC reports that from 2005-2014, there were an average of 3,536 unintentional, fatal drownings each year, which amounts to around ten per day. However, an additional 332 people died each year in drownings related to boating accidents, making this number even greater.
The U.S. isn’t the only country struggling with the problem of drowning-related deaths; drowning is a problem across the globe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional deaths from an injury. To put a number on it, there are an estimated 360,000 deaths from drowning each year, worldwide.
However, there are multiple actions that can be taken to decrease the risk of drowning. Both the CDC and WHO recommend installing a fence that is at least four feet tall and self-locks around home and community pools. This can drastically reduce the risk of children gaining access to the pool without their caregiver knowing and, in turn, potentially drowning.
Both organizations also recommend attending formal swim lessons that emphasize water safety. Wearing a life jacket and learning how to swim are great ways to help decrease chances of drowning. Similarly, learning how to administer CPR can also increase the chances of someone else surviving a drowning incident. The CDC writes that you could save someone’s life with CPR solely in the time it takes emergency responders to arrive.
With these tools, and multiple others, drowning could become a much smaller problem and many lives could be saved. To learn more about the life-saving work that Mustang Survival is doing to help prevent drowning-related deaths, sign up for your free subscription to Yachting from ValueMags today!

In the July 2017 issue of Flying, which can be instantly downloaded for free through the ValueMags website, Peter Garrison writes about a tragic accident as part of a regular feature called “Aftermath.” In this issue, Garrison analyzes the accident of a pilot flying his daughter and her friend to Florida for Spring Break. Although there were many factors at play, Garrison writes that one of the biggest causes of the accident that killed the pilot and his daughter and severely injured the friend, was the lack of fuel.
However, in a different portion of the magazine, a small, seemingly-unrelated blurb discusses another topic that is very relevant to this story and could make an accident like this much less likely. Flying writes, “A Swiss aircraft builder thinks the answer to the age-old problem of running short of fuel is simply to switch to an unlimited power supply.” And what is this seemingly-impossible unlimited power supply? The sun.
To some, solar power may still seem like an idea of the distant future, as it has felt for quite some time. However, what may not be apparent is how quickly the solar power market is growing and how soon conveniences like a solar-powered plane could come into our lives.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, solar power demand is at an all-time high in the United States. The Department of Energy writes that over the past eight years, the amount of solar power installed in the U.S. has increased 23 times, which is enough to power 5.4 million American homes.
While the growth of solar power in the United States is impressive, affordability has been one of the biggest obstacles for solar power’s success. However, the Department of Energy states that solar power technology is increasingly becoming more affordable with many companies working to make this trend continue so that everyday consumers will one day be able to afford it.
Many people still wonder about solar power in relation to other forms of energy, mainly fossil fuels. Solar power is much more reliable and abundant since fossil fuels are a finite resource. For example, the Department of Energy reports, “Solar energy is the most abundant energy resource on earth — 173,000 terawatts of solar energy strikes the Earth continuously. That’s more than 10,000 times the world’s total energy use.” In short, we do not have to worry about running out of energy when it comes to solar power.
If solar power’s reliability is not enough to exhibit the potential that comes with it, then it may be helpful to consider what solar energy does for the job market. Forbes recently reported that, in 2016, more people were employed in the solar power industry than the coal, gas, and oil energy industries combined. Similarly, Forbes says that “…solar power employed 43 percent of the Electric Power Generation sector’s workforce in 2016, while fossil fuels combined accounted for just 22 percent.” This demonstrates the potential benefits solar power has on the economy and the job market, as well.

One of the many magazines you can get from ValueMags is The Magnolia Journal. The most recent issue is the Summer issue (as this magazine is only published four times a year). However, there are many more topics explored than just your typical Summer tips. While there are plenty of delicious recipes and a multitude of ideas on how to enjoy the warm weather, the theme of this issue is confidence.
Readers are first introduced to this theme in the Letter from the Editor, where Joanna Gaines talks about how they decided to focus on confidence and the different ways this is reflected throughout this issue. It is true, there is no shortage of reflections of this theme, as there are multiple different essays and articles by many different people, each explaining their take on confidence or a story about a time when they used confidence.
These people range from Joanna’s friends and family to a new feature in the magazine on small businesses. As Joanna writes in her letter, “It is the perfect issue to introduce this small business feature because entrepreneurship is all about taking risks. And obviously taking risks requires confidence.”
Perhaps the most compelling reflection of confidence is the feature called “The Many Faces of Confidence,” where eight people reflect on confidence in their life. However, in this portion of the magazine, the stories are shared as small anecdotes, rather than page-long articles. The people included range from young to old, even including a child, all coming from different backgrounds, but circling around this issue’s theme. This section truly demonstrates the immense variety of circumstances in which confidence can present itself.

The latest Popular Science issue discusses the fact that consuming more salt in your diet may not have a direct correlation with drinking more water.
I’m sure you heard that the more salt you eat, the thirstier you get. There are actually two studies published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation disproving this theory. They in fact found that as people had more salt in their diets, they drank less water. Subjects who had a high salt diet made subjects hungrier instead.
Various international groups consisting of the German Aerospace Center, Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine, Vanderbilt University, among other institutions, conducted one of the studies. There were 10 males subjects part of the study to try and understand the effects of isolation on the human body as though it were a mission to Mars. They looked at the psychological and medical risks this kind of mission has for long periods of time while keeping track of their physical and mental state.
The study was conducted over a 105-day period also known as “spaceflight”. The first test was to reduce sodium intake from 12 grams to 9 grams and eventually to 6. They left each salt intake constant for a 29-day period. Obviously liquid consumption was being measured as well as how much they urinate daily.
The results were not as what people generally think where as more salt we consume, the more water we drink. They actually drank less water as they had more salt in their diet. In addition, they peed more and had more salt present in their urine. After testing the urine of each candidate, they found it was more concentrated suggesting the body was holding on to more water.
To understand the association with salt consumption with the human body, researchers turned to mice. They divided up the mice in three groups; one was fed low sodium with tap water, the second were given high sodium and tap water, the third had high sodium with a saline solution. The time span of the study was over a 4-week period. What they found was a component in the body called urea is needed to get rid of nitrogen in the kidneys. Salt counteracts with the water-attracting force of it. For your body to produce urea, it needs energy so researchers found mice of salty diets didn’t drink more but ate more.
Keep in mind that everyone’s bodies are different and these studies were never conducted on women or even female mice. Researchers have more work to do to study the effects of urea on the human body when it comes to helping dispose of salt while still holding onto water.
